Emergency relief corridor moves $240 million in 72 hours
Programmes · August 22, 2026
A dedicated settlement corridor allowed donor governments to fund regional relief agencies within three days.
Following a regional flood emergency, IWB activated its emergency payments corridor and moved $240 million from 14 donor governments to relief agencies and local procurement partners in 72 hours.
The corridor gives pre-approved agencies priority handling and waives transfer fees for payments tied to the declared emergency. Compliance screening continued on every payment, with a dedicated team reviewing alerts around the clock so that legitimate transfers were not held.
Operations teams in Geneva and Nairobi worked in shifts, and the median time from instruction to credit was 38 minutes. No payment was returned or lost.
IWB will publish a full review of the response, including lessons for future emergency activations, in its annual transparency report. Agencies wishing to be pre-approved for the corridor can contact their relationship manager.
IWB is a demonstration institution; this story is fictional and is shown to illustrate the site.
